The Story Behind the Pledge
The Scholar Mindset Reset Pledge emerged from countless conversations with colleagues across continents who shared a common concern: the increasing pressure to meet arbitrary metrics was fundamentally changing the nature of academic work—and not for the better.
Over the past year and a half, through workshops at CAUTHE, TTRA, and TEFI, as well as online surveys and informal discussions, over 100 colleagues contributed their experiences, frustrations, and hopes for a better academic culture. This pledge is the culmination of that collective wisdom.
The movement gained momentum following the powerful JTR Letter to the Editor by Dr. Stephanie Benjamin and colleagues (2024), along with influential voices like Professors Sara Dolnicar, Sandro Carnicelli, and Gabby Walters. Their courage in speaking out inspired many of us to take concrete action.
Why This Matters
Academia should be a place where meaningful scholarship thrives, where curiosity is valued over quantity, and where the well-being of researchers is as important as their output. This pledge is a commitment to making that vision a reality.
By signing, you're not just making a personal commitment—you're joining a community of scholars who believe that change is possible, and that together, we can create a healthier, more ethical, and more impactful academic culture.
